Is Anatomy of a Fall worth watching?

Yes, and it is the best courtroom film in years precisely because it refuses to be one. Justine Triet uses the trial to dismantle a marriage in public: every argument the couple ever had is entered as evidence, played back, and interpreted by strangers. Sandra Hüller gives the performance of the decade in two languages.

The thing to be clear about before starting is that it does not resolve. The film has an outcome and withholds the truth, and it does so on principle rather than as a tease. Anyone who needs to know what happened on that balcony will find the ending intolerable. Anyone interested in how a relationship looks when read by people who were not in it will find it exceptional.

FAQs about Where to Watch Anatomy of a Fall

Does the film tell you what actually happened?

No, and it is not being coy. Triet has said the point is that the trial cannot recover the truth, only competing readings of it, and the script is built so both remain fully available. If an unresolved ending will ruin the film for you, this is the wrong two and a half hours.

How much of it is in French?

Most of it, with substantial English and some German, and the language switching is central rather than incidental. The couple used English as a neutral ground, so the court's insistence on French becomes a way of putting one spouse at a disadvantage. Subtitles are essential.

Is the dog really that good?

Messi won the Palm Dog at Cannes and has one of the film's most important scenes, which is not a joke: the animal is a witness nobody can question, and Triet uses it for the single most upsetting beat in the trial. It is a genuinely remarkable piece of animal performance.
